History

We have a long history in Cumbernauld, being their first youth football club when we formed in 1969. Several of our youngsters went on to become professionals during the 1980s and 1990s, including Derek Whyte (Celtic, Aberdeen, Middlesbrough and Scotland International), Jackie McNamara (Dunfermline, Celtic, Wolves, Aberdeen, Falkirk and Scotland International) and Dougie Bell (St Mirren, Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibernian).

Following a period of decline, the club was reborn and re-branded with the launch of a new single-age group team in 1999 and, over the next five years, was steadily built back up.

It is now considered to be one of, if not the biggest club in central Scotland, with a playing membership of over 500 and a further 200 active weekly participants in community programmes.

Season 1999–2000 was the first season for the new club and it kicked-off well with the team winning an invitation tournament at Easterhouse. Later that season the club also travelled to attended its first major event when the 88’s participated in the Blackpool Cup.

Season 2000–2001 saw the club venture into Europe for the first time since the relaunch when the team travelled to particapate in the Hospitality Cup, Venlo, The Netherlands. This whetted the appetite and since then the club has visited a number of European venues.

2001 team

Season 2001-2002 saw the clubs development programme take off as three new teams were formed i.e. 89’s & 90’s at 11-a-side & 92/93’s at soccer sevens, such was the demand in these age groups the section was split into two teams.

Our founder team (88’s) kick-off their season winning festivals at Campsie & Twechar and went on to build on their early success winning the clubs first major trophy since the relaunch winning the CKDYL Condorrat Cup.

Easter 02’s European tour was to the Top of Holland Trophy, Assen, The Netherlands which again was a great experience.

Season 2002–2003 saw phase two of the clubs development programme with age bands 94’s & 95’s being formed and more importantly our Academy was launched for children born in 1996 & 1997. This initiative would ensure the clubs sustainability as teams are brought through each season.

Our 89’s prospered in this season, this was kick-off by winning the Inter Sports Council Soccer Festival, representing Cumbernauld & Kilsyth Area Sports Council. This was followed up later that season with a superb clean sweep of domestic trophies winning the CKDY League, Condorrat Cup, League Cup & Knock-Out Cup, a magnificent achievement.

Our annual European tour saw our 88’s & 90’s visit Belgium to participate in the Euro-Cup Tornooi, Hamont.

The Club was once again being noticed with two players from our 90’s squad stepping up to join pro club Partick Thistle.

Season 2003–2004 saw our small game set-up continue to grow and develop, our Academy delivered another two new soccer sevens teams at the 97’s age band and also recruited a new batch of budding starts born on 1998.

Our 88’s & 89’s continued to assert themselves with the 89’s winning the Peter McMahon and Knock-out Cups and were Scottish Cup 1/4 finalists. The 88’s also won the Knock-out Cup before going close in the Coppa Tricolore, Parma, Italy lifting the 3rd place trophy.

Season 2004-2005 was a memorable season for a number of reasons as the club went from strength to strength.

The club organised its first Soccer Festival to celebrate the fifth anniversary which was a great success. Later that year a number of boys joined professional clubs from our 95s and 89s, (3) 95s joined Celtic, (3) others signed up with Dundee United and (2) moved on to Clyde. Our successful 89s saw (1) player join Gretna and (3) to Clyde.

Over and above this group a number of boys at various age levels also received supplementary coaching at professional clubs. Prior to this activity our Academy once again delivered two new teams at the 98s age band and also successfully recruited a new group of 99s.

The 11 a-side teams were successful both at home and abroad. Our 90s kicked-off the season with summer festival wins at Grahamston BC and Kildrum Utd. Easter 2005 saw our 89s bring home our first European Winners Trophy winning the Brabant Cup, the Netherlands, with our 90s also Runners-up in the same event.

This was followed up with 88s winning the Central FA Earlsgate Cup with a memorable extra time victory against Syngenta Juveniles and our 90s capturing the CKDYL Peter McMahon Cup, winning a penalty shoot-out against Carbrain BC.

Season 2005-2006 kicked off with our Summer Soccer Festival which again was a great success with over 50 teams traveling from various regions to compete over the weekend. The club was again invited to represent the local sports council in the annual inter sports council festival, and our 95s again brought home the silverware.

We again went on our travels participating in European tournaments, three teams i.e. 94s, 93s and 92s flew to Barcelona, Spain to play in the Trofeo Mediterraneo Cup with our 93s fairing best reaching the quarter finals and also being presented with the fair play award, our 90s flew out to Amsterdam, the Netherlands to participate in the Tulip Cup. Both tours were magnificent adventures for the boys and an experience never to be forgotten.

On the domestic front our 93s lifted the CKDYL Knock-out Cup in their first year in the competitive game set-up, they also finished the season as league runners-up.Our 87/88s kept their remarkable record of reaching a cup final each year since 2002, when they reached the West Lothian Ace Exhausts & Tyres Cup Final, where they were unlucky to go down 2-1 to RosebankBC of Grangemouth.

2006–2007 produced a number of significant achievements for the club.

The season kicked off with our 3rd Annual Festival which once again was delivered without a hitch. Our academy age 2000’s again produced two small sided teams.

Our now annual European tour saw our 93s, 94s & 95s travel to Belgium to take part in the Hasselt Cup. A great time was had by all. On the pitch our 94s & 95s faired best with our 95s only losing one in six games, our 94s excelled themselves, with a significantly weakened side battled their way to the final where they lost out to the host club, a tremendous effort never the less. Off the pitch our Center Parcs accommodation and a visit to a local theme park proved great entertainment.

On the domestic front our 11-a-side teams continued to assert themselves, our 93s (U14’s) reached back to back cup finals but unfortunately could not repeat last season’s success.

Our successful 89/88 side (U19s) continued their great run by reaching another cup final only to lose-out to Steins Thistle. This disappointment was more than made up for however when the team went on to lift their first Championship winning the Central FA League.

The club again continued to provided a source of talent for the professional game with two players form our 97s stepping up to join Hearts & Hibs.

The club reached a major milestone in this year when the club was awarded the SFA Quality Mark Standard award, this award signified the progress the club has made in recent years in terms of policy development, planning, administration and coach education.

Season 2007-2008 saw a number of significant developments as the club continued to cement its self as the towns major community club.

Our festival as usual kicked off the season, unfortunately however for the first time monsoon conditions were experienced and day 2 had to be cancelled.

Our academy once more produced another new section who for the first time sampled the SFA recommended 4s model.

The club built on the SFA Quality Mark Standard award when it was awarded the Development level the first club in the Central Region to achieve this.

Our 94s once again ventured into Europe, where they played in the Tulip Cup in Amsterdam, our 97s experienced their first trip, when they travelled south of the border to Preston taking in the Blackburn V Man Utd, Premiership game as part of the trip.

The weather that was experienced early in the season continued most of the year with a number of breaks due to unplayable pitches, our 11-a-side teams found to difficult to deal with this with only the U19s forming any meaningful challenge. Our soccer 7s sections continued to flourish with teams at all age groups.

The two most significant developments in year were the creation of a Girls Academy for Girls P2-P6 and completing the male pathway Cumbernauld Thistle Amateurs agreed to join the club as the Colts adult arm and would become Colts Amateurs next season.

Season 2008-2009 saw the club continue to grow and develop. The year started with a significant achievement when the club was awarded the SFA Quality Mark “Community Level” Award, the first club in the Central Region to achieve this accolade and become one of only seven clubs nationally.

Our annual festival in August was once again a great success, and was capped off with our 95s winning their event. Our academy once again produced a new section and they went on to pioneers the 4s model in the town, our girls section expanded with the addition of a new U12’s team.

In October our club chair was invited to attend an SFA best practise visit to Finland, with one of the strands of this visit reviewing their community club structure.

Early in the New Year the club picked-up another significant award when club chair Stewart McKenzie was presented with the SFA, Sunday Mail & McDonalds Services to Football Grassroots Award.

On the field all our teams were doing well with all 11-a-side teams pushing for honours, in the end our U19s coming closest finishing joint winners. Another problem free European tour saw 3 teams (94s, 95s & 96s) attend the Holland Cup which was played in the Utrecht area.

The season ended on a high with our 95s winning the Kildrum Utd annual festival and in doing so clinch the clubs team of the year award.

Season 2009-2010 reaffirmed the clubs position as the towns leading club with success on and off the pitch.

The season kicked-off with the clubs 7th Annual Soccer Festival, this challenged the clubs resolve when day one had to be switched to Broadwood due to the terrible weather, despite this the festival was once again a great success, an added bonus saw our 97’s win their event.

Another successful European tour for our 95’s, 96’s and 97’s who took part in the Geusselt Cup, Holland, with our 97’s losing-out in the final on penalties.

Our competitive teams delivered some silverware as our U21’s won the Regional Cup and were runners-up in the League and League Cup, Our U14’s won the Bobby Brass Cup and our U15’s were unlucky to lose out in the final of the Central Safety Shield final.

Off the pitch the club was given a major boost when the Scottish Football Partnership donated a fantastic mini-bus as recognition of the clubs standing in the game as the Regions first SFA Quality Mark “Community Level” club.

Season 2010-2011 will be remembered for success off the pitch as much as on it. The club’s quest to develop its own home took a huge step forward with the award of £550,000 grant funding (£150K from the Environmental Key Fund and £400k from the Government’s Cashback scheme). It is hoped our new 3G pitch will be built for the start of next season.

On the pitch the club continued to grow with its playing membership in excess of 330 and was the only club in the area to be able to offer the full player pathway.

Our 4’s and 7’s age groups went from strength to strength and our 11-a-side competitive teams did not disappoint with a number of successes.

Our 98’s attended their first European tournament; the Holland Cup. A great time was had by all and was topped when they came home with the winners trophy.

On the domestic front a number of our teams put up a sustained challenge with our 94’s winning their league cup.

Season 2011-2012 saw the club build on the success of the previous season both on and off the pitch.

On the pitch, a number of teams were in contention for silverware with three teams successfully winning trophies. Our U21’s won the LYFA League and the Regional Cup, our U15’s the FVFDA CIS Cup and our U14’s the CSFA Victoria Clydesdale Shield.

Another successful European tour saw our U13’s, U14’s and U15’s attending the Holland Cup with our U14’s bringing home the clubs 3rd European trophy.

Off the pitch, the club agreed the investment of the £400k awarded to the club last year from the Scottish Governments Cashback scheme to create a FIFA standard 3g pitch at Broadwood Stadium.

The club from August 2012 will be based in the Stadium where we will work in partnership with North Lanarkshire Leisure to improve the functionality and use of the Stadium for the benefit of the club and the local community.

This partnership provides the club with a wide range of dedicated and shared accommodation and extensive access to the pitch. Our new home provides a fantastic platform to build for the future.

Season 2012-2013, our first season at our new Broadwood home, saw the clubs continued growth and development. The club cemented itself a one of the country’s major grassroots football clubs when the Scottish FA awarded the club the Quality Mark Legacy Award, the first in the country to receive this accolade.

There were a number of contributing factors to this, not least the community engagement programmes delivered: the establishment of a Disability Section, After School Centre, Mini-kickers group as well as a number of school driven initiatives.

To celebrate this fantastic achievement, John Collins, ex-Scotland star, took time-out to visit the club.

The clubs new Ladies team set the standard on the pitch with a terrific start to the season in the SWF Division 1, their success was the catalyst for the creations of a number of female sections from U9’s through to U15’s. The male sections again continued to grow with new 2007’s and 2008’s sections being formed.

Our U15’s and U21’s excelled, the U15’s winning the C&KDYL and League Cup with the U21’s bagging the LYFA League Cup and Challenge Cup. Our annual European tour saw our U15’s travel to Italy for a six day tour, a fantastic time was had by all who attended.

Season 2013-2014 was the club’s most successful for many years. There was a marked improvement in performance across the club, and being embedded at Broadwood Stadium clearly contributed to the success.

The club continued to grow with over 560 section players, including 90+ females with the clubs community programmes catering for a further 100 participants each week.

The clubs over 35’s kick-started the silverware collection winning their League Championship and Presidents Cup, the clubs youth teams were all in contention to lift further awards, our U13’s girls, boys U14’s and U15’s were beaten cup finalists, however one of the clubs U13’s won the Knock-out Cup and our U16’s community side won their League title.

One team, however, stuck-out from the rest. Our U16’s team were deserved winners of the team of the year following their sweep of trophies: Colts Festival Winners, C&KDYL Division A League Champions, League Cup, Knock-out Cup and Regional Cup Winners, a magnificent achievement.

Season 2014-2015 saw the club continue to develop and grow; playing numbers topped 600 with 100 female playing members, making the club one of the biggest female academies in the country.

There were success stories throughout the club with our development age groups thriving and our 11-a-side teams competing.

Our competitive age group were all in the mix for silverware with a number of notable successes: our Amateurs won the club’s first amateur title when they secured the Caledonian League Division 1A title, which was achieved in no small part to their unbeaten home record. Our >35’s again delivered a league and cup double two years in succession. Our U17’s retained the Regional Cup beating Moorlands at Ochilview, home of Stenhousemuir FC, and both U14’s won local cup with our U15’s losing out in a final.

However, by far the most significant development in this season was the clubs attainment of a Scottish FA License and Membership. This was the foundation to the application and acceptance into the Scottish Lowland Football League for Season 2015 – 2016. This was a massive step as the club moved up in 2015/16 to join the professional game.

Season 2015-2016 was another good season for the club. Participation numbers stabilised as the previous season with 600 male and 100 female players. Given the clubs popularity, our development sections, due to facilities availability, were all full.

Once again, there was success at the competitive age groups, the most notable being our CSFA U13’s treble winning side, when they bagging the League title, Knockout Cup and Central Region Cup. Our >35’s completed their third successive league title, our U20’s won the Lowland League/EOS League Cup and our Girls U15’s won our first ever Girls League title, our FV U13’s and CKDYL U17’s were also beaten finalists.

Our newly formed Scottish Lowland Football League side in their first season performed way above our expectations, finishing a fantastic 4th in the league. They also reached the William Hill Scottish Cup 3rd round with a notable win against junior giants Authinleck Talbot.

Season 2016-2017 was another fantastic season for the club, which saw the club’s female arm win their first senior trophy when the Ladies A Team beat a much-fancied Celtic FC side 1-0 against all the odds.

The clubs academy continued to provide teams at all levels across the male and female pathways. Another successful festival was delivered in August with over 1200 players taking part.

Season 2017-2018 was a very special year for the club when the Senior Team won the Scottish Lowland League Cup with a 3-1 victory against Selkirk FC at Netherdale, home of Gala Fairydean Rovers. This was a remarkable result coming from behind and playing with 10 men for all of the second half. The clubs first senior trophy was secured, thanks to goals for Murray and a Brown brace.

The clubs community outreach arm “Colts in the Community” stepped up their intervention activities, with coaching for all programmes and various school partnerships being formed.
